Struggling with what to send your email list? Feeling stuck staring at a blank screen? Let me introduce you to your new email marketing best friend—ChatGPT.

This AI-powered tool can generate content ideas, draft emails, refine your writing, and help you stay consistent with your email marketing. But should you rely on it completely? No. The magic happens when you use it as a powerful assistant, not a replacement for your voice. Let’s dive into how to use ChatGPT for email marketing effectively.

Step 1: Generate Content Ideas

Before you even start writing, you need ideas. ChatGPT can help brainstorm relevant topics in seconds. Try prompts like:

  • Give me 20 email newsletter ideas for [your industry].
  • What are people searching online about [your topic]?
  • Generate content ideas for [specific target audience].

Ask for more ideas than you need—some will be gold, some won’t fit. Copy the best ones into a Google Sheet to refer back to when planning your emails.

Step 2: Draft Your Email Content

Once you have an idea, you can use ChatGPT to draft content. Instead of asking it to write an “email,” start by requesting a blog post or article on the topic.

Why? If you ask for an email right away, it might generate something too formal or generic. A blog-style piece will be more detailed and engaging. Then, you can shape it into an email.

Try prompts like:

  • Write a blog post about [topic].
  • Tell a story about how [your product/service] helped a client with [specific problem].
  • List 10 tips for [common problem your audience faces].

Step 3: Refine and Add Personality

ChatGPT’s first draft isn’t final—it’s a starting point. Now, tweak it to sound more like you. Within ChatGPT, you can:

  • Ask it to rewrite in a more conversational tone.
  • Make it shorter and more direct.
  • Add examples, pop culture references, or statistics.
  • Adjust the perspective (e.g., first person, second person).

Once you get a version you like, paste it into a document and do a final edit yourself.

Step 4: Format as an Email

Now, it’s time to turn your content into an email. You have two main options:

  1. Send the content directly as an email.
    • Prompt: Convert the following blog post into an email newsletter.
  2. Encourage readers to click through to a blog post, video, or podcast.
    • Prompt: Write an email that encourages subscribers to click through to this blog post: [paste content].

Be clear about what action you want readers to take—reply, book a call, read a post, or make a purchase.

Step 5: Refine the Email

Take the first version of your email and tweak it again:

  • Make it more conversational.
  • Use shorter sentences.
  • Ensure it sounds like you.

Then, ask ChatGPT for subject lines:

  • Generate 20 subject line options for this email.

Pick your favourite or tweak one until it’s just right.

Step 6: Add a Strong Call to Action (CTA)

Never send an email without a clear CTA. Ask ChatGPT to generate one:

  • Add a CTA about booking a discovery call.
  • Write a CTA encouraging subscribers to check out this new product.

Step 7: Copy, Paste, and Edit One Last Time

Now, paste the email into your email platform and do a final edit. Make sure:

  • It flows naturally.
  • It feels like you wrote it.
  • The CTA is clear and compelling.

Then, hit send!

Bonus: Repurpose Your Content

Don’t stop at email! You can ask ChatGPT to turn your content into:

  • Instagram carousels
  • LinkedIn posts
  • Twitter threads
  • Reel or TikTok ideas

Prompt: Turn this email into 5 Instagram post ideas.
