Email marketing shouldn't feel like that thing you "should" do but keep putting off. It should be your secret weapon that works while you sleep!
The problem isn't that you need to write better emails (though that helps). It's that you're not maximising the entire email real estate at your disposal. A conversion-focused design ensures every part of your email works toward engaging your audience and driving action.
Enter the sandwich strategy: Your main content is still the star, but the right header and footer elements can dramatically boost your results without extra work. Win-win!
Here are the exact content blocks that will transform your email marketing from "meh" to "making money":
HEADER CONTENT BLOCKS
A roundup email is a fantastic way to increase email marketing engagement. It’s all about curating a list of valuable resources your subscribers will appreciate. Whether it’s your own content or others’, this strategy encourages more clicks and keeps your subscribers engaged.
The Promo Banner
A simple, colourful strip at the top of your email works wonders. One clear message about your offer, event, or service with a straightforward button (or not).
It doesn't need to connect to your main content—it's just an easy opportunity for engagement and to make sure your audience knows what's happening now in your business.
Think about it in the same way as the banners put across the top of websites. That quick snapshot.
menu items
A conversion-focused design for your emails should prioritise seamless navigation for your subscribers. Make it easy for your subscribers to get to where they need to go by adding a mini menu to the top of your emails. These are the quick links to get to common pages like: Shop, Book, Blog or Member Portal.
opt out or preferences
A conversion-focused design isn't just about boosting engagement—it’s also about giving your subscribers control. This may feel counterintuitive but works brilliantly. "Don't want emails about this launch? Click here (you'll stay on our regular list)." You'll reduce unsubscribes and build trust. People appreciate having options and it makes you feel better about sending those promotional emails.
countdown timers
Nothing creates urgency like watching time tick away. Use these sparingly during promotions or launches to create that all important urgency - in a visual way.

CONDITIONAL CONTENT
This is where email marketing gets exciting. Show different content in your banners to different subscribers:
- Display rewards points balance to loyalty members (Or if they aren't a loyalty member invite them to join)
- Remind shoppers about items sitting in their wishlist
- Show personalised discount codes to specific segments (e.g. don't forget you have a discount code available)
These can form part of both your normal campaigns or your automations.

footer CONTENT BLOCKS
The P.S.
Did you know this is the second most-read part of your entire email? A conversion-focused design makes full use of it to:
- Reinforce your offer ("P.S. Remember, this offer ends tomorrow")
- Add a bonus ("P.S. You also get our quick-start guide")
- Make an announcement ("P.S. Just launched our podcast")
- Offer an alternative ("P.S. Prefer one-on-one help? We've got you covered")
- Create anticipation ("P.S. Next week I'm sharing my favourite client success story")
- Prompt action ("P.S. Ready to start? Book your free call here")
TL:dr sUMMARY
For busy readers (which is everyone these days). Summarise your email in 2-3 lines with one clear call-to-action. They'll thank you for respecting their time.
FEATURED PRODUCTS OR SERVICES
A mini-showcase in your footer feels helpful rather than pushy. Feature your top three services or newest products. Even better—personalise these based on what they've browsed before.
These can relate to the content of your email or be totally unrelated. Whatever feels like the best fit.

PROMINENT CALL TO ACTION
Sometimes clarity beats subtlety. A conversion-focused design includes a beautiful, can't-miss button at the bottom gives skimmers an obvious next step. Make it impossible to ignore!
STAGE TRACKER
Perfect for onboarding sequences: "You're at Stage 1 of 3." This creates anticipation and helps subscribers mentally prepare for what's coming next in your sequence.
testimonial
Including a testimonial in the footer adds social proof and risk reversal, showcasing real results or positive experiences to build trust with your audience.

RISK REVEAL/FAQ ICONS
Address common questions in a visual form in as many emails as you can. Simple icons showing shipping, warranty, or returns information eliminate purchasing barriers and build confidence.
HANDY LINKS
For memberships or services, include quick links to portals, billing pages, or support. It's a small touch that makes a big difference in customer experience.

social links & highlights
Instead of just listing social channels, showcase something specific: "Join our Instagram community where we share weekly tips." Give them a reason to connect beyond the email.
Some providers even allow you to include a feed of recent posts.
how to make it easy
The beauty of this approach? Set it up once, benefit forever:
- Create a master template with your favourite sections
- Save individual content blocks in your email platform (Known as Saved Content, Universal Content, etc depending on your software)
- Mix and match for different email types
- Implement one new block each week
With some software, like Klaviyo you can set it up so that if your Universal Content Block appears in multiple automation emails you can edit it in just one location and it will update all emails that block is used it. So easy.
Start small! Pick ONE of these strategies to implement this week. The P.S. line is perfect to begin with—minimal effort, maximum impact.
Your emails can work much harder without requiring more effort from you. The sandwich strategy lets you maintain valuable content while creating multiple opportunities for engagement.
Which content block will you try first? Your future self (and your bank account) will thank you for taking this simple step.
