When we talk about conversions in email marketing, we typically mean turning subscribers into customers – getting them to make a purchase.
And let’s be honest, that’s the ultimate goal for most of us.
But conversion isn’t just limited to purchases. It can mean any action you want your subscriber or audience to take, whether it's clicking a link, downloading something, answering a question, or engaging with your content in any meaningful way.
That’s why it’s essential to have a clear strategy that you can tailor to the desired action.
No matter what goal you have for your email campaign, the conversion principles remain the same.
While preparing a lesson for the Email Experience, I stumbled across a useful framework for improving conversions called the LIFT Model, developed by Chris Goward from conversion.com.
Although the Lift Model is mainly used for websites and landing pages, the principles can easily be applied to email marketing too. I’m going to walk you through these six key conversion factors and explain how you can apply them to your email marketing to boost results.
Whether you're trying to increase sales, improve engagement, or encourage subscribers to take any action, these tips will help you achieve your goals!
Let’s dive in.
Value Proposition
This is essentially your offer—what you’re putting out there for your subscribers to act on. The question you need to ask yourself is: Is my offer compelling, or is it just generic?
If you’re simply asking people to book a strategy call without providing a clear reason why they should, you're likely to see lacklustre results. You need to go beyond the basics and really make your offer stand out. What sets your offer apart from the competition? Why should someone act on it right now? These are critical questions to address.
The key to a strong value proposition is making the value incredibly clear and obvious. If people don’t see the unique value you’re providing, they’re not going to feel the need to take action. You want to create an offer that’s irresistible—something they feel they absolutely must have.
Think about what makes your offer a "no-brainer." It could be the problem you’re solving, the outcome you're promising, or even exclusive bonuses that make your subscribers feel they’re getting something truly special. Whether it's a discount, a free resource, or a time-limited offer, the value must be front and centre, so that it stands out and compels action.
Without a strong, clear value proposition, no amount of email marketing techniques will push your audience to convert. It all starts with the offer itself. So, ensure that when your subscriber reads your email, they’re left thinking, I want this, and I want it now.
Increase Offer Relevance
To create converting emails, increasing the relevance of your offer to your audience is crucial. When your emails feel personal and timely, they resonate more with your subscribers, making them more likely to take action. There are two primary ways you can increase relevance in your email marketing strategy:
- Understand Where They Came From
The key to relevance starts with understanding how a subscriber entered your email list. What did they sign up for? This insight allows you to tailor your messaging from the very first email, increasing the likelihood of engagement. Here are a few examples of how you can apply this:
- Signed up for a coupon code? Dive straight into offering that discount and follow up with sales-related emails that help them use it.
- Made a purchase? Focus on post-purchase communication, including customer service updates, how-tos, or care tips for their new product.
- Downloaded a lead magnet? These subscribers are likely seeking help or solutions, so lean into nurturing emails packed with advice, tips, or product recommendations.
By aligning your follow-up content with the subscriber's entry point, you're offering immediate value, which naturally makes your emails more relevant and engaging.
- Is This Email for Me?
Once you know where they came from, the next question your subscriber will ask themselves is: "Is this for me?" You can answer this by segmenting your audience and sending targeted content.
Segmentation allows you to divide your list into groups based on:
- Customer status: Have they purchased before? If not, they might need nurturing, while previous customers may respond better to upsells or loyalty rewards.
- Engagement level: Are they active and opening your emails regularly, or have they gone cold? Your messaging can adapt to either re-engage lapsed subscribers or reward loyal, engaged ones.
- Interest or stage: Tailor your language and content to different interests or stages in the buyer journey. This could mean recommending beginner-level products to new customers or advanced solutions to more experienced buyers.
Ultimately, increasing relevance boils down to sending the right emails to the right people at the right time. When your audience feels understood and catered to, your emails will hit home more often, leading to higher conversions and stronger relationships with your subscribers.

Increase Clarity
Increasing clarity in your emails is essential for ensuring that your subscribers quickly understand your message and know exactly what action to take. Here are two effective strategies to enhance clarity and craft converting emails:
- Clear, Succinct Messaging
- Direct Communication: Start by clearly stating, “This is for you if...” This approach directly addresses the reader and helps them immediately identify whether your offer is relevant to them.
- Highlight Benefits: Focus on the specific benefits and tangible outcomes of your offer. What will the subscriber gain? Why should they care?
- Use Simple Language: Avoid jargon and complex terminology. Your messaging should be accessible to all subscribers, regardless of their background or familiarity with your products or services.
- Simplify Email Design
Create converting emails that are easy to read by ensuring they are well-structured and visually appealing. Use plenty of white space to avoid overwhelming your readers. A clean design allows the eye to rest and helps important information stand out. Additionally, break down your content into short, digestible sections. Use bullet points or numbered lists to highlight key points, making it easier for subscribers to scan through the email quickly.
Increase Urgency
One of the key factors that drive conversions is urgency. It prompts potential customers to ask themselves, “Why now? Why should I take action on this right now?”
Urgency can be categorised into two types: internal and external. Internal urgency stems from the subscriber's own circumstances. For instance, a soon-to-be parent might need to make a purchase before their due date, or someone might need to replace a broken coffee machine immediately.
As marketers, we can amplify this internal urgency through strategic messaging in our converting emails. By creating educational content, sharing relatable stories, and appealing to emotions, we can help our audience recognise the importance of prioritising our offers.
On the other hand, external urgency involves factors outside the subscriber's control, such as deadlines for special offers, limited-time discounts, or scarce product availability.
These tactics are straightforward to implement in your campaigns—promoting a 20% discount for 48 hours or announcing a limited number of available spots for a service can effectively drive immediate action. However, many marketers miss out on the opportunity to integrate urgency into their automated emails.
For instance, if you're using platforms like Klaviyo and Shopify, you can create expiring coupons within your automation sequences, allowing you to establish legitimate urgency without manual intervention.
Additionally, incorporating countdown timers using tools like Deadline Funnel can visually reinforce urgency.
If you're working with a limited budget, consider tagging subscribers at various stages of your automation to highlight eligibility for bonuses or limited offers. For example, you can tag a subscriber when they qualify for a special promotion and remove that tag once the offer expires.
Even simple strategies, like offering a restricted number of spots each month, can effectively enhance the urgency factor in your automated communications, leading to more converting emails overall.
Reduce Anxiety
Reducing anxiety is crucial for encouraging subscribers to make a purchase and fostering peace of mind. To achieve this, it’s essential to proactively address potential concerns by answering frequently asked questions directly in your converting emails.
This can include clarifying shipping costs and times, outlining return policies, and providing product information. Implementing risk reversal techniques, such as offering money-back guarantees or trial periods, can further enhance consumer confidence.
Social proof also plays a vital role; sharing testimonials, customer reviews, and user-generated content can create a sense of trust and connection.
Additionally, utilising visual elements like icons and graphics can effectively communicate your policies, making important information easily digestible.
Reduce Distractions
Distraction is a significant hurdle in crafting converting emails that many people overlook. To enhance conversion rates, it’s crucial to minimise distractions within your emails.
Start with scannable emails that guide readers toward your call to action (CTA). Ensure your CTA is prominent and unmistakable, employing buttons, bold text, or coloured links that draw attention. Focus on one clear action per email to avoid overwhelming your subscribers. Rather than cluttering your email with multiple articles, blog posts, quotes, or unrelated content, keep it simple and directed.
Once a subscriber clicks through, it's equally important to maintain that clarity.
Take a hard look at the post-click experience. Are you making it easy for them to complete their transaction? Ensure that the path from your email to the final purchase is straightforward and free of unnecessary steps. Streamlining this process can significantly improve conversion rates, making it easier for customers to say "yes" and complete their purchase without hesitation. The simpler you make the process, the more likely your subscribers are to convert.
As you craft your emails…
Whether for individual campaigns or automated sequences, remember to evaluate each of the six key factors discussed.
Reflect on your value proposition—your offer—and consider how you can enhance its relevance by connecting it to your subscribers’ needs and interests. Focus on increasing clarity and urgency while simultaneously reducing any potential anxiety and distractions. By identifying one or two areas for improvement, you can strategically create converting emails.
