Things have shifted dramatically in email marketing over the past few years. What worked in 2021 isn't necessarily resonating with audiences today.
I've noticed a significant change in my own email performance lately. Those podcast release emails that used to get solid opens and clicks? They are dropping. My big tip-style roundup emails aren't as effective as they once were either.
People catch on to trends quickly. They start seeing the same formats everywhere and naturally want something different.
So what is working now? These five email content ideas may be what you need.
A quick note: Don't try to implement all five styles at once. Choose what fits your business, your writing style, and your products. Quality over quantity always wins.
Personal Letter Style
Think of these as modern-day confessionals or open letters, written in first person with a vulnerable, conversational tone that gives readers an intimate peek behind the curtain. If you’re exploring email content ideas that build real emotional connection, this style is a powerful place to start.
Key characteristics:
- Very specific, personal details
- Story-driven structure
- Vulnerable tone of voice
- Clear lesson or insight
- Connects to audience challenges
Examples of opening lines:
- "I can't believe I'm typing this, but..."
- "I'm writing this at 2am because I can't sleep..."
- "I messed up big time..."
These emails work because they feel authentic. You're sharing anecdotes, behind-the-scenes stories, or insights whilst still guiding readers toward a call to action.
How to use them:
- Share the story behind a product launch
- Discuss a mistake you made and how you're fixing it
- Reveal the origin story of your business
- Connect personal experiences to your offerings
EXAMPLE – IMPOSTER SYNDROM / PRODUCTIVITY COURSE CREATOR
Subject: "Do I really deserve to teach this?"
Dear [Name],
Can I be brutally honest with you?
Every time I hit "publish" on a course, I have the same thought: "Who am I to teach this?"
There are people with more experience, bigger audiences, better credentials. People who've been doing this longer, have more impressive case studies, went to better schools.
Last week, a student emailed me after completing my productivity course. She said it helped her save 2 hours a day and finally feel in control of her schedule.
My immediate thought wasn't pride – it was panic. "What if she finds out I still struggle with email management? What if she discovers I'm not perfect at this?"
Then I remembered something my mentor told me: "You don't need to be perfect to be helpful. You just need to be a few steps ahead."
The truth is, I'm not the world's greatest productivity expert. I'm just someone who found systems that work, failed at many that don't, and can save you the years of trial and error.
I'm not teaching from a place of perfection. I'm teaching from a place of experience – mistakes included.
Maybe that's more valuable than perfection anyway.
If you're hesitating to share your knowledge because you don't feel "expert enough," remember: Someone needs exactly what you have to offer, told exactly the way you tell it.
Your imperfections don't disqualify you. They make you relatable.
Still figuring it out, [Course creator name]
P.S. I still use my own productivity course as a refresher when I fall off track. The teacher becoming the student is the most honest part of education.

Seasonal Emotional Content
We’ve always aligned content with seasons and occasions, but there’s now a deeper focus on the psychology behind these moments—not just surface-level messaging.
Instead of generic lines like 'Hey, it’s Christmas—here are some gift ideas,' we’re tapping into the real emotions people experience during these times. Understanding where your audience is emotionally and mentally allows you to offer meaningful support through your products or services. This approach stands out as one of the most impactful email content ideas because it fuses emotional resonance with timely relevance.
Examples of this approach:
- New Year's: Your perspective on resolutions vs. sustainable habits
- Back to school: "To the mum crying in the school parking lot"
- End of financial year: Connecting to feelings about achievements the numbers don't reflect
- Christmas: The pressure of perfection vs. finding magic in the mess
Why this works:
- Provides counter-narrative to typical seasonal messaging
- Gives people permission to feel how they actually feel
- Helps you stand out from generic seasonal content
- Creates deeper emotional connection with your audience
The key is understanding where people are psychologically during these times, then offering specific ways to help through your products or services.
EXAMPLE – NEW YEARS / CLOTHING ECOMMERCE STORE
Subject: "January 3rd is when the magic really happens"
Hey [Name],
Everyone talks about January 1st. Fresh start. New year, new me. Gym packed with good intentions.
But can I tell you a secret? January 3rd is when the real transformation begins.
That's when the excitement wears off and the work starts. When your alarm goes off at 6 AM and your bed feels like a warm hug. When your motivation from two days ago feels like a distant memory.
January 3rd is when you discover who you really are.
I've been there. We all have. That moment when you realize change isn't about the calendar flipping – it's about showing up when showing up feels impossible.
That's why we created our "3rd Day Collection." Not for January 1st energy. For January 3rd grit.
Clothes that remind you why you started when the starting gets hard. Fabrics that move with you through the doubt. Designs that whisper "you've got this" when your inner voice gets loud.
Because transformation doesn't happen in moments of inspiration. It happens in moments of perseverance.
Your January 3rd gear is waiting.
To the long game, Sarah
P.S. Every purchase comes with our "Reality Check" workout plan – designed specifically for when motivation fails and discipline has to step in.
The Digest Format (Yes, Newsletters Are Back!)
This might surprise you - and it's a complete 180 from what I've previously recommended.
I've spent years telling people to avoid newsletters and focus on single call-to-action emails. But what I've learnt: some people genuinely want a wrap-up of what's happening in your world.
The modern digest approach:
- Short snippets of content (1-2 lines, not paragraphs)
- 4-5 content blocks maximum
- Scannable visual hierarchy
- Mix of different content types
- Each block can have its own call to action (but doesn't need one)
Content blocks you might include:
- Behind-the-scenes business updates
- Trend reports or interesting numbers
- Quick tips, fixes, or recipes
- Client wins or testimonials
- Customer spotlights
- Tool or resource recommendations
- Links to engaging social posts
- Product features or "product of the month"
Pro tip: Use conditional content to personalise these digests based on subscriber segments. Show different offers, testimonials, or content blocks depending on where someone is in their customer journey.

Educational "How-To" Quick Wins
Educational content still performs incredibly well, but the format has evolved. People want quick solutions, not lengthy step-by-step guides.
Think bite-sized value rather than comprehensive tutorials.
These short, actionable tips are among the most evergreen email content ideas – especially for brands that position themselves as helpful experts in their space.
Examples:
- "60-second morning routine that changed everything"
- "5 quick styling tricks to look expensive on any budget"
- "4 things to do when you hit a creative block"
- "3 questions to validate your business idea"
- Answers to frequently asked questions
Structure for success:
- Clear, specific headlines
- Dot points for easy scanning
- Brief explanations
- Common mistakes to avoid
- Link to next steps or resources
These emails work because they provide immediate value whilst subtly connecting to your products, services, or content.
EXAMPLE – ECOMMERCE COOKWARE BRAND
Subject: "The 15-minute meal formula (works with any ingredients)"
Hey [Name],
Tired of staring into your fridge at 6 PM with no dinner plan?
I'm about to teach you the flexible meal formula that professional chefs use when they cook at home. It works with whatever ingredients you have and takes 15 minutes max.
THE UNIVERSAL 15-MINUTE MEAL FORMULA:
Base + Protein + Vegetables + Flavor + Fat = Delicious Meal
Let me break this down:
STEP 1: Choose Your Base (2 minutes to prep)
- Rice (use leftover or 90-second microwaveable)
- Pasta (angel hair cooks in 4 minutes)
- Bread (for open-faced situations)
- Greens (for salad-style meals)
STEP 2: Pick Your Protein (5-8 minutes to cook)
- Eggs (scrambled, fried, or poached)
- Canned beans (rinse and warm)
- Leftover meat (just reheat)
- Tofu or tempeh (cube and pan-fry)
- Canned fish (tuna, salmon, sardines)
STEP 3: Add Vegetables (3-5 minutes)
- Frozen vegetables (steam in microwave)
- Quick-cooking fresh (spinach, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms)
- Raw vegetables (cucumber, bell peppers, carrots)
- Leftover roasted vegetables
STEP 4: Create Flavor (30 seconds)
- Lemon juice + herbs
- Soy sauce + ginger + garlic
- Olive oil + balsamic + basil
- Hot sauce + lime + cilantro
STEP 5: Finish with Fat (for satisfaction)
- Olive oil drizzle
- Avocado slices
- Nuts or seeds
- Cheese
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLES:
Fridge contents: Leftover rice, eggs, frozen peas, soy sauce
Result: Fried rice (rice + scrambled eggs + peas + soy sauce + sesame oil)
Fridge contents: Pasta, canned beans, spinach, lemon
Result: Mediterranean pasta (pasta + white beans + wilted spinach + lemon + olive oil)
THE SECRET WEAPON: Always keep these 5 flavour combinations in your pantry:
- Lemon + olive oil + garlic
- Soy sauce + sesame oil + ginger
- Balsamic + olive oil + herbs
- Lime + hot sauce + cumin
- Butter + herbs + black pepper
No more decision fatigue. No more 30-minute meal prep. Just grab what you have and plug it into the formula.

User-Generated Content Features
If you’re running low on inspiration, dig into your customer base – some of the richest email content ideas come from the real-life stories already happening around your product or service. This goes way beyond sharing a customer review or reposting an Instagram story. We're talking deep dives into one customer's journey - almost like a case study but in a succinct, engaging format.
Examples:
- "One customer, five looks" - showing different ways someone styled your pieces
- Before and after transformations
- "Products in the wild" - following someone's journey (like marathon training with your athletic gear)
- Client success stories with specific numbers and timelines
- Course success stories focusing on one person's transformation
What makes these powerful:
- Real names and specific details
- Concrete numbers and metrics
- Before/after comparisons
- Direct quotes from the customer
- Specific strategies or tools used
- Clear timeline of progress
- What's next for this person
Yes, these take more time to prepare because you need to invest in gathering someone's story. But they provide incredible social proof whilst inspiring others to see what's possible.
EXAMPLE – BUSINESS CONSULTANT
Subject: "How Rachel went from $50K to $200K in 8 months (real numbers)"
Dear Entrepreneurs,
Meet Rachel, a wedding photographer who was booking clients but barely breaking even. Eight months ago, she was considering quitting photography to get a "stable job."
Today, she's on track for her first $200K year and has a 6-month waitlist.
Here's exactly how we transformed her business together.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
📸 RACHEL'S TRANSFORMATION
STARTING POINT (January 2025):
- Revenue: $4,200/month average
- Profit margin: 12% (barely covering expenses)
- Working: 60+ hours/week
- Mindset: "Maybe I'm not cut out for this"
TODAY (August 2025):
- Revenue: $18,500/month average
- Profit margin: 68%
- Working: 35 hours/week
- Mindset: "I can't believe this is my life"
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
🔧 WHAT WE CHANGED
Problem #1: Underpricing "Rachel was charging $1,200 for 10-hour wedding days plus editing. She was making less than minimum wage."
Solution: Value-based pricing structure
- Raised minimum package to $3,500
- Created premium packages up to $8,500
- Focused on experience, not just photos
Rachel's Words: "I was terrified to raise prices, but [consultant] showed me I was attracting price-shoppers, not dream clients. The right clients happily pay for quality."
Problem #2: No Systems "Rachel was reinventing the wheel for every client – contracts, timelines, editing workflow. Chaos."
Solution: Automated client experience
- Streamlined inquiry-to-booking process
- Template contracts and timelines
- Batch editing system
Rachel's Words: "I used to spend 3 hours on client communications that now take 20 minutes. The systems gave me my life back."
Problem #3: Poor Marketing "Rachel was posting randomly on Instagram and hoping for referrals. No strategy."
Solution: Strategic content plan
- Defined ideal client avatar (busy professionals, $100K+ household income)
- Created content pillars around luxury experience
- Implemented SEO-optimised blog strategy
Rachel's Words: "My inquiries went from 2-3 random leads per month to 15-20 qualified prospects. The content strategy changed everything."
