Mid-year financial reports, quarterly reviews, end-of-year planning – sound familiar? While you're crunching those numbers, here's another quick check-up that deserves five minutes of your time: your email engagement metrics.
You're busy running your business, and diving deep into email engagement metrics feels like another overwhelming task on your never-ending to-do list. But what if I told you that a simple 5-minute check-up could reveal exactly why your email list isn't converting into the loyal, ready-to-buy fans you're after?
We're not going deep into complex strategies today – we're casting a big picture view so you can get a vibe for how well your email marketing is actually performing.
Before We Dive In: What You'll Need
Head over to your email marketing platform and navigate to your campaigns or broadcasts tab.
(Important note: We're looking specifically at your campaigns for this check-up, not your automations. Automations have very different engagement rates because of their timing and context, so they need separate analysis.)
From here, you can either:
- Get a feel for your general ranges across recent campaigns
- Generate a report if your platform makes it easy
- Check your reporting dashboard
Ready? Let's get stuck in.

Open Rates
The benchmarks:
- General businesses: 42.35% average (based on 3.3 million campaigns analysed by MailerLite)
- E-commerce 37.93% (Klaviyo)
If you're sitting below 25% (or below 20% for e-commerce): You definitely need improvement. Start here:
- Run deliverability checks using Google Postmaster Tools and Email Tool Tester
- Clean up your list – those non-openers are dragging down your sender reputation
- Review your email authentication settings
Sitting between 25-40% (or 20-30% for e-commerce): You're below average, but not in crisis mode. Focus on:
- List clean-up (still important!)
- Experimenting with subject lines
- Testing different send times
- Evaluating whether your content matches what your audience actually wants
Between 40-50% (or 30-45% for e-commerce): Strong open rate territory! Now you can:
- Start segmenting your audience for more relevant content
- Test sending to smaller, more targeted groups
- Consider increasing email frequency
- Refine your subject line strategy
Above 50% (or 45% for e-commerce): You're doing amazing! Keep it up and consider:
- Emailing more frequently (you're not fatiguing your audience)
- Advanced segmentation strategies
- Testing new content formats
A word of caution: Open rates aren't as reliable as they used to be. Apple Mail's privacy protection automatically marks emails as "opened" for about 52% of opens, inflating these numbers. This makes your email engagement metrics like click rate even more important...
Your Click Rate: The Real Engagement Test
This is where the rubber meets the road. Click rates tell you if people are actually engaging with your content – one of the most valuable email engagement metrics to track.
The benchmarks:
- General businesses: 2% average (MailerLite)
- E-commerce 1.29% (Klaviyo)
Below 1% (or 0.75% for e-commerce): Time for some serious attention. Ask yourself:
- Are you including clear calls to action in every email?
- Do you have prominent, clickable links?
- If your open rate is good but clicks are low, those opens might be artificially inflated
Between 1-2% (or 0.75-1.2% for e-commerce): Below average, but fixable. Focus on:
- Diversifying your calls to action beyond just "buy now"
- Linking to blogs, podcasts, videos, social media
- Adding interactive elements like polls or surveys
- Mixing sales CTAs with value-driven links
Between 2-2.5% (or 1.2-2% for e-commerce): Strong click rate! Polish it up with:
- Better email design and layout
- More obvious calls to action with contrasting buttons
- Improved conversion copy
- Strategic placement of multiple CTAs
Above 2.5% (or 2% for e-commerce): Excellent work! Consider:
- Sending more emails (your audience is clearly engaged)
- Testing advanced engagement tactics
- Scaling up your email frequency
Unsubscribe Rates
Average unsubscribe rate: 0.08%
If you're significantly higher than this, it's often a sign that:
- Your list needs cleaning
- Your content isn't relevant to your audience
- You need better segmentation
Don't stress as much about this email engagement metric unless it is dramatically different – it naturally ties into your opens and clicks.
Sales Conversion Rates: Where the Magic Happens
This is where email marketing proves its worth, but it's also the trickiest to benchmark because every campaign has different goals. Still, your conversion rate is one of the most important email engagement metrics you can track, especially if you're looking to scale your revenue.
For E-commerce Businesses:
The benchmark: 0.08% of subscribers place an order per campaign (Klaviyo)
Below 0.05%:
- List clean-up time
- Review how clearly you're conveying your offers
- Check if your calls to action are obvious
0.06-0.08% (just below average):
- Add social proof and testimonials
- Include quick answers to common questions (shipping, sizing, returns)
- Implement risk reversal elements and guarantees
0.08-1% (strong conversion rate):
- Focus on segmentation and personalisation
- Add personalised product recommendations
- Test different offer structures
Above 1%:
- Excellent! Scale up with more frequent emails
- Continue experimenting with segmentation and personalisation
For Service-Based and Digital Product Businesses:
This gets trickier because many emails aren't direct sales pitches. Your best conversion data comes from campaigns where you're actively promoting something – launches, quarterly service pushes, or new programme announcements.
Industry guideline: 0.05-2% conversion rate for promotional campaigns
Below 0.05%:
- Review your offers – are they compelling enough?
- Check your messaging clarity
- Ensure your targeting is on point
0.05-2%:
- You're doing okay! Focus on refining your messaging
- Test different promotional approaches
- Improve your targeting and segmentation
Above 2%:
- Time to scale up and reach more people
- Consider increasing promotional frequency
Pro tip: One study found that 40% of interested prospects booked sales calls when there was no immediate booking option, but 66.7% did when there was immediate booking available. That's a 122% improvement! The fewer hurdles between your email and the desired action, the better your conversion rates – and ultimately, your email engagement metrics.
Your Quick Action Plan
So, what's your weakest area? Your strongest?
More importantly: what's the one action you're going to take this week to improve your rates?
Sometimes it's as simple as experimenting with one change across your next two or three campaigns. Test it, measure it, and see if it works for your audience.
