As we step into 2025, email marketing continues to prove its power. With 88% of people checking their email daily and businesses seeing a $36 return for every dollar spent, the impact is clear! Based on my observations in client inboxes and the latest updates in email software, I’ve compiled my top predictions for the future of email marketing trends.

1. Deliverability Monitoring Is Your New Best Friend

The email landscape has changed dramatically since Google and Yahoo updated their authentication requirements. What worked yesterday might not work tomorrow!

What's Really Happening:

  • Deliverability challenges are on the rise
  • Outlook and Hotmail are particularly finicky
  • The usual advice of "don't spam people" isn't cutting it anymore
  • Even when you're doing everything right, things can go wrong

The Fix: Monitor your numbers after EVERY email. Yes, every single one. Because when deliverability tanks, it tanks fast, and you want to catch that before it becomes a proper mess.

2. The 8-Second Challenge

Forbes dropped this truth bomb: people spend an average of 8 seconds reading emails. Yes, even your beautifully crafted newsletters!

Making Those Seconds Count:

  • Add a "TL;DR" section at the top (or bottom)
  • Use that P.S. line - it's the second most-read bit
  • Put action banners where they can't be missed
  • Keep it scannable with nice headings and short, sharp sentences
  • Use reinforcing imagery and gifts (but don't go overboard)

Remember: Sometimes standing out means doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing. If your industry is all flashy GIFs and emojis, maybe clean and simple is the way to go.

The stages of email marketing flows: welcome, then nurture, then convert, then serve.

3. Engagement Is Your Golden Ticket

Let's break free from the one-way street of "click here to buy" emails. We need to get creative with engagement, and here's why: it directly impacts your deliverability.

Fun Ways to Get People Clicking:

  • Add clickable polls (Mailerlite's survey block is brilliant for this)
  • Include review blocks for quick five-star ratings
  • Offer digital download gifts (everyone loves a freebie)
  • Try gamification:
    • Embed quizzes
    • Add calculators
    • Include puzzles (yes, even Wordle-style games)
    • Use "spin the wheel" offers

Aim for at least one engaging email per month if you're sending weekly. Make it something that gets people actually doing something.

4. Personalisation (But Make It Proper)

Forget just slapping someone's name at the top - real personalisation boosts open rates by 26%, but only if you do it right.

What Actually Works:

  • Use their name throughout the email
  • Reference their business type (e-commerce vs service-based)
  • Show different content blocks based on customer status
  • Create universal content blocks (Klaviyo style) that update across all automations

The best part? 83% of customers are happy to share data for better personalisation. Just ask!

5. AI: The Elephant in the Room

47% of email marketers are already using AI, and it's not going anywhere. But let's be smart about it.

Current Uses:

  • Content writing (beyond just ChatGPT)
  • Email template design
  • Subject line optimisation
  • Automation building
  • Predictive content and send times

But remember: AI needs a human touch. Review everything it creates to make sure it actually sounds like you.

6. AI in the Inbox

Apple's iOS 18.1 is changing the game with AI summaries. They're taking your longer emails and turning them into bite-sized highlights.

Making It Work For You:

  • Keep messages crystal clear
  • Nail those subject lines (they don't get changed)
  • Make CTAs obvious
  • Use it to your advantage for sales emails (let AI be the one saying "20% off")

7. Being Real Will Help You Stand Out

With everyone jumping on the AI bandwagon, being genuinely you is your secret weapon.

Keeping It Real:

  • Use AI for ideas and editing, not your voice
  • Read emails aloud - do they sound like you?
  • Skip the formal corporate speak
  • Remember: email is conversational, not a business report!
