We've all been there. Staring at that blank screen, cursor blinking mockingly, as we try to craft the "perfect" email to our subscribers.

Why is it so hard? Because somewhere along the way, we convinced ourselves that every single email needs to be packed with groundbreaking wisdom or comprehensive how-tos.

I get it. I really do.

One of my clients recently confessed this exact struggle. She'd sit down to write her email, feel the pressure to create something extraordinarily helpful, and... freeze. Complete writer's block would set in.

Sound familiar?

Why We Get Stuck in the Newsletter Mindset

Many of us carry this hidden belief that we need to "earn our place" in someone's inbox with:

  • Comprehensive guides they don't have time to read
  • Roundups of information they could find elsewhere
  • Professional-sounding content that feels nothing like us

But here's the gentle reality check: Your subscribers aren't looking for another information download. They're looking for connection, insight, and that little spark that helps them see things differently.

Sometimes a single sentence of encouragement or one simple question is exactly what they need.

Prompts for When You're Feeling Stuck

When the blank page feels intimidating, ask yourself these questions:

  1. What tiny insight from a recent client session could help others?
  2. What's one belief you notice holding your community back?
  3. What small step are you working on in your own growth journey?
  4. What's a common worry you hear, and how do you gently address it?
  5. What might your subscribers need to hear during this particular season?
  6. What simple phrase do you find yourself saying over and over?
  7. What line from a book or conversation recently made you pause?
  8. What gentle question might shift someone's perspective today?
  9. What encouraging truth does your audience need to remember?
  10. What's something you've recently changed your mind about?

Keep these somewhere handy for those moments when the words just won't flow.

A Surprising Benefit: Building Your List Becomes Easier

This approach doesn't just help with writer's block – it makes growing your list feel more authentic too.

"Subscribe to my newsletter" has never inspired anyone to hand over their email address.

But when you're sending these thoughtful little letters, the emails themselves become the reason to subscribe.

Share snippets on Instagram with "Today I sent this thought to my community..." Show the genuine responses you receive. Let people glimpse the conversation they could be part of.

Here's how you can use this strategy to grow your list:

  • Share snippets on Instagram with "Today I sent this thought to my community..."
  • On your lead page, include actual examples of emails you've sent (yes, the real ones!)
  • Screenshot replies you've gotten (minus identifying details, obviously) to show people actually love these emails

This is social proof at its finest. No more "trust me, my emails are great." Now it's "see for yourself how valuable these are."

And please, find a name that feels more like you than "newsletter":

  • “Truth-teller”
  • “Wisdom Drop”
  • “Resilient Reminder”
  • “Little Lift”
  • “Curiosity Club” or “Get Curious”
  • “Success Scoop” or “Scoopful of Success”
  • “Miracle Minute”
  • “Insider”

(Friendly tip: Be careful with names tied to specific days or frequencies – they can create unnecessary pressure when life gets busy)

"But How Do I Include My Offers?"

If sales emails make you cringe, here's some good news. This approach creates natural openings for your offers without the awkwardness:

  • Mention the program where the insight emerged: "This came up in my recent Creative Confidence workshop..."
  • Reference the work that sparked the thought: "While guiding a client through my signature process..."
  • Add a gentle invitation: "If this resonates and you'd like to explore further, my calendar is open for conversations this month."

The focus stays on the value, but the path to working with you becomes clear.

You can also add additional content blocks in the email to mention the sales options. Use space like your P.S. or add an announcement header bar or add a testimonial in the footer.

See this blog post for how to utilise this “Sandwich Strategy”.

Remember, adopting this letter approach doesn't mean you're committing to it exclusively. You can absolutely weave pure sales emails between your wisdom letters when the time is right.

Think of it as creating a natural rhythm that works for both you and your subscribers.

Perhaps you'll send three value-packed letter-style emails, then include a straightforward invitation when you're opening spots for new clients or launching a program. This creates a natural balance that feels good to everyone involved.

Or when you're launching something new, you might pause your regular letters for a more focused sequence.

Your subscribers won't mind—they'll appreciate your honesty and clarity.

What makes the letter approach so wonderful is that it builds genuine connection, which means when you do send that occasional sales email, people are much more receptive.

Remember: This is your community you're nurturing. Trust your instincts about what feels right.

This also means that you don’t have to use this strategy if it’s not what your subscribers want. But this is an idea that resonates with many that you might just notice too.

The Permission You've Been Waiting For...

You don't need to write comprehensive guides every time.

You don't need to sound like a marketing textbook.

You don't need to follow someone else's email formula.

You just need to share one honest thought, consistently.

Try this gentler approach for a few weeks. Notice how your writer's block begins to fade. Watch as genuine responses start coming in. Feel that quiet satisfaction as email marketing transforms from a dreaded task into a meaningful conversation.
