Email marketing is one of the most effective tools for growing your business, but building a strong email list can be tricky. Many businesses fall into common traps that prevent them from getting the most out of their list-building efforts.
Here are ten list building mistakes to avoid and how to ensure your list is primed for success:
Mistake #1: Not Growing Your List Enough
The first of the list building mistakes is underestimating how many subscribers you need to achieve your sales goals. It’s easy to assume that a small list will convert well, but the truth is, conversion rates are often much lower than expected.
In e-commerce, for example, conversion rates can be as low as 0.09% per campaign. This means that if you have 1,000 people on your list, you might only make one sale per campaign. If your goal is 20 sales, you’ll need a significantly larger list.
It’s crucial to set realistic expectations and plan for steady list growth over time. Waiting until you’re ready to launch a new product or service to start building your list is a recipe for disappointment! Instead, continuously work on expanding your list, even during quieter periods. The more subscribers you have, the better your chances of hitting your sales targets when it counts.
Pro Tip: Regularly review your conversion rates and adjust your list growth strategy accordingly. This ensures you're not caught short when you need your list to perform.
Mistake #2: Focusing on Quantity Over Quality
While it might feel satisfying to see your subscriber count soar, a large list isn’t always better. If your list is full of freebie seekers who signed up for a giveaway with no real interest in your products or services, your open and conversion rates will suffer. These unengaged subscribers can even harm your deliverability rates, meaning your emails might end up in spam folders.
Instead of focusing solely on growing your list size, prioritise attracting subscribers who are genuinely interested in what you offer. This might mean saying no to certain list-building tactics, like massive giveaways or participating in email bundles that attract a broad but disengaged audience. Quality subscribers—those who are likely to become customers—are far more valuable than a long list of unengaged contacts.
Pro Tip: Regularly clean your list by removing inactive subscribers. This keeps your engagement rates high and ensures you’re focusing on the people who are most likely to buy from you!
Mistake #3: Sign Up to My "Newsletter"
“Sign up for my newsletter” is one of the most uninspiring calls to action you can use. People are inundated with emails every day, and very few are excited about the prospect of receiving yet another generic newsletter. If you want people to join your list, you need to give them a compelling reason!
Instead of asking people to sign up for a newsletter, focus on the benefits they’ll receive. Will they get exclusive discounts? Insider tips? Early access to new products? Be clear about what’s in it for them. When potential subscribers see the value in joining your list, they’ll be much more likely to hand over their email addresses.
Pro Tip: Highlight at least three key benefits of joining your list. This could be anything from special offers to valuable content they won’t find anywhere else.

Mistake #4: Focusing on the What, Not the Why
When encouraging people to join your list, it’s easy to get caught up in telling them what they’ll receive—weekly updates, tips, exclusive offers. But what really drives sign-ups is explaining why these things matter. Why should someone care about your updates or tips? What’s in it for them? This is one of the most common list building mistakes I see.
Your sign-up forms and lead magnets should clearly communicate the benefits of joining your list. For example, instead of offering “top website tips,” frame it as “top website tips to double your conversions.” This shifts the focus from the what to the why, making it clear how the information will help them achieve their goals.
Pro Tip: Use the “so that” method when crafting your opt-in offers. For example, “Sign up for my top website tips so that you can attract more clients and grow your business.”
Mistake #5: Hiding Your Sign-Up Forms
You might have an amazing lead magnet or offer, but if your sign-up forms are hard to find, it’s like hiding treasure in a locked chest. Many businesses tuck their forms away in the footer of their website or rely on a single pop-up that appears once and never again. This approach severely limits the number of people who will actually see—and sign up for—your offer.
Your sign-up forms should be visible and accessible in multiple places. Consider using a sticky bar at the top of your website, placing forms within blog posts, or creating a dedicated landing page for your lead magnet. Repeated exposure is key; people need to see your offer multiple times before they’re ready to take action.
Pro Tip: Regularly promote your sign-up forms on social media and include them in your email signature. The easier it is to find your form, the more subscribers you’ll attract!
Mistake #6: Only Using One Strategy
Relying on just one or two methods to grow your list is limiting. Maybe you have a discount code pop-up on your site and a sign-up form at checkout. While these can be effective, they’re not enough to attract a diverse audience. Different people respond to different types of offers, so it’s essential to mix up your list-building strategies.
Consider adding multiple lead magnets tailored to different segments of your audience, hosting webinars, or running challenges to attract new subscribers. Seasonal or event-based strategies, like special promotions or collaborations, can also give your list a significant boost. The key is to keep experimenting until you find the right mix that consistently attracts new, engaged subscribers.
Pro Tip: Track the performance of each list-building strategy to identify what works best. This allows you to double down on successful tactics and phase out those that aren’t delivering results.
Mistake #7: Not Welcoming Your New Subscribers
First impressions matter, especially when it comes to email marketing. When someone signs up for your list, they’re most engaged right at that moment. If your first email is just a generic confirmation or a simple “thank you,” you’re missing a huge opportunity to connect with them!
Your welcome email or series should not only deliver what you promised but also introduce your brand, share your story, and set expectations for what’s to come. This is your chance to build rapport and start turning subscribers into loyal customers. A well-crafted welcome series can make a significant difference in your engagement and conversion rates.
Pro Tip: Don’t just send one welcome email—create a series that gradually introduces your brand, showcases your best content, and guides new subscribers toward making a purchase.
Mistake #8: Treating Everyone the Same
Not all subscribers are at the same stage in their journey with you, so why treat them all the same?
Someone who signed up for a discount code is at a very different point than someone who downloaded an in-depth guide or attended your webinar. Sending the same emails to both groups can result in disengagement and missed opportunities.
Segmenting your list based on how subscribers joined allows you to send more relevant content. Tailor your messaging to where they are in the customer journey. For example, discount code sign-ups might need a series that nudges them toward their first purchase, while those who attended a webinar might be ready for a higher-level offer. The more personalised your emails, the more effective they’ll be!
Pro Tip: Use behavioural triggers and segmentation to send targeted messages that resonate with each subscriber’s specific needs and interests.
Mistake #9: Forgetting Subscribers Between Sales
One of the biggest list building mistakes you can make is going silent between sales periods. If you only email your list when you have something to sell, you’ll quickly lose their interest—and their trust. Your subscribers signed up to hear from you regularly, not just when you want their money.
Keep your list engaged by sending valuable content consistently, even when you’re not in launch mode. This could be helpful tips, behind-the-scenes updates, or stories that resonate with your audience. By maintaining regular communication, you stay top of mind, and when it’s time to sell, your subscribers are more likely to buy.
Pro Tip: Create a content calendar to ensure you’re emailing your list at least once a week, even during off-peak times. This keeps engagement high and your audience primed for your next offer.
Mistake #10: Giving Up on a Lead Magnet Too Soon
Creating a lead magnet takes time and effort, but many business owners give up on it too quickly if it doesn’t deliver immediate results. If your lead magnet isn’t converting as expected, don’t rush to scrap it! The problem might not be the lead magnet itself but how you’re promoting it, the messaging on your landing page, or even a technical issue.
Before abandoning a lead magnet, dig into your data. Check conversion rates, test different headlines, and ensure your sign-up forms are easy to use on both desktop and mobile. Often, a few small tweaks can make a big difference in performance.
Only if you’ve exhausted all options should you consider retiring a lead magnet.
Pro Tip: Continuously test and optimise your lead magnets and landing pages. A well-placed tweak can turn a mediocre lead magnet into a high-converting one!
