Have you ever found yourself frustrated with a stagnant email list, wondering why people aren’t subscribing despite your best efforts? I get it.

Firstly, you have to understand that you’ll have this natural growth right at the beginning of your email marketing journey – and that it’s normal to have things stagnate after that.

Second, a lot of your initial list growth will come from your existing audience, whether that’s on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, or people you know within your networks.

You might get that rapid increase, but at some point, you might exhaust that audience if you aren’t proactively growing elsewhere.

In this ultimate list building guide, I’ll share my best list building strategies that’ll supercharge your list growth massively.

Whether you are a business owner, course creator or service provider, email marketing has the potential to free you from the busy, get sales and create more space in your life!

Here is everything you need to know about how to improve your list building strategy.


TIP 1 – Give People a Reason to Sign Up

If you’ve heard me say it once, you’ll hear me say it again. Saying, “sign up to my newsletter” is not enough. If you don’t have a lead magnet, that’s fine, but you still need to give a reason for people to join your list by saying,  come join my club or get exclusive updates.

Give them a reason and don’t just say sign up for or subscribe.

Of course, if you can introduce some sort of lead magnet or opt-in incentive, that is fantastic and that gives more reason for your audience to sign up.

Forget the generic “subscribe to my newsletter” pitch; entice your audience with exclusive updates or a lead magnet that truly adds value to their business or daily lives.

Remember – people value their email addresses so they’re not just going to give it away for free!


Tip 2 – Check Your Stats

Before you get your lead magnet or list builder in front of more people, you need to take a deep dive into what’s working for you right now.

First you need to look at your lead page. If you have a dedicated signup page for your lead magnet, you would expect 50 to 60% of people who visit that page to be signing up. If you are not reaching those numbers, that tells us the problem is you’re not converting enough people.

If this is the case you need to go ahead and look at how to improve the conversion on your lead page, for example, what messaging can you use, et cetera.

The you need to look at your sitewide statistics. If you have a popup or some sort of signup form, you want to be looking at about 1 to 3% of all your website visitors signing up. If you are not getting those numbers, that tells us that something’s not quite hitting with your messaging or you are not making it obvious enough.

Tip 3 – Make Your Signup Obvious on Your Website

Ensure your signup options are impossible to miss across your website.

Consider using floating bars, popups, or banners to capture your audience’s attention and make it crystal clear and easy for them to subscribe.

I know not everyone loves popups, but you can set restrictions on them so that they only come up after a certain period of time.

Make sure to put it on your footer and your sidebar, but make it super obvious and on all the pages that makes sense.

For example, for an e-commerce businesses, your number one priority is people buying.  You’ll have your products featured first, but then your list builder underneath that.

If you don’t have it obvious, if it’s just hidden in your footer somewhere – that’s the big reason why people aren’t signing up.

Tip 4 – Make Your Lead Magnet Prominent on Your Socials

You can’t just expect that you’ve posted about it once ages ago that people are going to join.

Make sure you are continually sharing it across all social media platforms, preferably anytime you are not actively doing some sort of promotion or launch.

This means things like changing the cover (banner) image on your Facebook page to include a mention of your lead magnet and have your learn more button at the top of the page go straight to the lead page.

Also, make sure the pinned post on your Facebook and Instagram pages is your lead magnet. Put it in your highlights, make sure it’s in your link in bio.

We now get five links in a bio so there is no excuse not to have your lead magnet at least being one of them! So make sure it’s prominent.


Tip 5 – Leverage Your Content

If you are producing content of any form, whether it is a blog post, podcast, YouTube videos or just Facebook lives, make sure you are mentioning your lead magnet in all of these places.

You can use dynamic ads during podcast episodes, mention it at the end of your videos, or provide a direct link to your signup page. This means people have a next step once they read that or listen to that and go, “I love what this person’s about, what’s the next thing for me?”


Tip 6 – Mention Your Email List Often

Consistent promotion is the key. Incorporate mentions of your email list into your regular social media posts.

This doesn’t have to be every single time going “get this lead magnet, get this lead magnet, it’s amazing”. But if you share a tip, an insight, a meme or some sort of funny reel, whatever it is make sure you say “if you want more help get this lead magnet”.

Also consider using tools like ManyChat to automate sign-ups directly through Instagram comments. People won’t even have to leave Instagram to sign up to your list.

You don’t always just have to do this with your lead magnet – you can also mention your email list. You can share a story or a post saying, “I just shared this insight with my email list – If you want more tips like, make sure to join”.

Or anytime you’re sharing your content and someone goes there, then they see your lead magnet. The path should always lead to your email list.


Tip 7 – Add Event-Style Lead Magnets to your List Building Strategy

Enhance your lead magnet offerings with limited-time events, such as webinars, challenges, or giveaways.

You’ll also need to create a sense of urgency to attract new subscribers and diversify your audience.

At the end of the day, it’ll be refreshing for your audience to find different ways to interact with you, rather than just through a PDF or Word Document.

Tip 8 – Use Ads Strategically

Once you’ve optimised your existing strategies, you can delve into paid advertising.

It’s crucial to understand your conversion rate before investing heavily in ads to ensure a positive return on investment.

Ads can be a great way to grow your list quickly, especially if you don’t want to spend a tonne of time being active on socials et cetera.


Tip 9 – Participate in Bundles or Swaps

There are another couple of really good ways to get in front of other people’s audiences and one is to participate in bundles or swaps.

What’s a lot more popular now is having different gift bundles going around at Christmas or Black Friday, or people saying, “you can sign up for X dollars and get access to this many lead magnets or freebies”.

Or it’s great to have a low price point offer that you can contribute to these bundles where people spend for example 50 bucks and they get $200, $300 worth of products more and then they sign up to your individual one if they choose to have it.

You can also do this as swaps too. You can offer to promote their lead magnet and they do the same in return.

This can be with paid things, free things, it could be with your events, you can find someone who shares your audience, someone in your networks; you have the same target market, but you sell different things.

Then there are collaborative giveaways, joint venture webinars and so much more.

Bundles have proven to be the biggest list growth strategy for me so it’s definitely something I’d recommend you explore.


Tip 10 – Get Active with Guest Speaking

Explore opportunities to speak at summits, contribute to courses, doing live trainings in people’s Facebook groups, or appear on podcasts.

As part of that, get the opportunity to share your lead magnet and it comes with this level of trust. This is what I love about guest speaking. You typically won’t have multiple a week, but when you do get them, the people in that audience already trust that person, and therefore trust you.

Guest speaking not only broadens your reach but also establishes trust with new audiences, making them more likely to subscribe.
